Zulu
The Zulus started parading in 1909, whereas the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club was formed in 1916. The Krewe has made a serious impact on their community at large and on Mardi Gras in New Orleans in general, and the parade is the climax of the Carnivale season for many seasoned Mardi Gras veterans. Zulu rolled on the traditional Mardi Gras route for the first time in 1968 making their presence felt in a still segregated community. Zulu irreverntly lampoons all the majestic pretense of Rex. Louis Armstrong famously reigned as King Zulu in 1949.
